Castlepren Lodges

Arran & Sais Lodge, Llanbister Road, Powys - April 2015

Client: Andrew & Jenni Thomas

Architect: James Thomas

Structural Engineer: Mann Williams

Manufacturer: Kenton Jones

Two Tŷ Unnos holiday lodges built as a diversification of a farm business run by Andrew and Jenni Thomas were designed and project managed by their son, James Thomas.

Castlepren Lodges are carefully sited on the clients beautiful farmland. The novel ‘L’ shape design frames a decked courtyard, the views across unspoilt areas of rural Mid Wales and the evening sun to the Southwest.

Manufactured in Welshpool, the Tŷ Unnos box beam frame, studs and joists are Sitka spruce from Pontrilas Timber and Douglas fir from Esgair Timber who also supplied the vertical Western red cedar cladding. Warmcel® insulation from PYC is used throughout. The standing seam steel roof system is manufactured in Wales. The foundations, external and internal finishing were completed by a local team of Powys craftsmen.

Despite the wet and windy conditions, construction was swift with each Tŷ Unnos frame erected in a day with the floor, wall and roof panels installed the next day. The 20 weeks construction program completed on time in April 2015.

The holiday lodges in the heart of Mid Wales opened in May and are used as a base for rest and relaxation, sightseeing and outdoor pursuits.
